What is climate protection and how can we participate?

Climate protection aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions such as CO2 and thus limit the man-made greenhouse effect. The starting point for all climate protection activities is an inventory of the level of CO2 emissions caused by a company, a product or a service. These so-called carbon footprints enable you to identify the setting screws to avoid and reduce CO2 emissions. This can be done, for example, through efficiency measures and the use of renewable energies. By supporting climate protection projects, you can also offset emissions that cannot be avoided in the short term.

What are recognized climate protection projects?

Climate protection projects save CO2 emissions. This can be a hydropower plant in Guatemala that improves the energy supply in the region without using fossil fuels such as coal and diesel and thereby causing CO2 emissions. This CO2 saving is tradable - in the form of emission reduction certificates. The mechanism of emissions trading enables the promotion of sustainable development and the avoidance of CO2 globally at the lowest possible cost. Different types of climate protection projects are used for this - for example hydropower plants, biomass plants, wind farms, reforestation and forest protection projects.

How does climate protection work in the hotel industry?

In cooperation with ClimatePartner, your hotel is committed to climate protection. There are numerous opportunities for sustainable and climate-friendly action in the hotel industry. A hotel reduces its harmful greenhouse gas emissions, for example, by purchasing electricity from renewable energy sources. In addition, guests can enjoy regional and seasonal dishes from organic farming. Waste can be separated and recycled in all hotel areas. In addition, textile cleaning has a major impact on the consumption of water, energy and other resources. The towel change program and the cleaning service on request offer guests individual scope for sustainable action. Further energy saving potentials are e.g. the use of LED lights and other modern technologies.

In 3 steps to climate neutrality:

1) Calculation of the carbon footprint
In a hotel's carbon footprint, all relevant greenhouse gas emissions are calculated and reported over time. This CO2 footprint is systematically based on all emission indicators such as Energy consumption, textile cleaning, consumables or employee arrival determined.

2) Reduction and avoidance
With the help of the hotel's calculated CO2 balance, the largest emission drivers can be identified and action areas for CO2 reduction and avoidance can be defined.

3) CO2 offsetting
Ultimately, all unavoidable greenhouse gas emissions are offset by the support of climate protection projects. These projects have been proven to save CO2 emissions, are regularly checked by independent organizations and are certified according to internationally recognized standards.
